President's Message:
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL! I hope you had a wonderful holiday
season and I wish each of you a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. As we start the new year, we have

volunteers for the Celtic and she will soon be looking for volunteers for the Red
Rose. Her immediate needs for the
Celtic Classic are five volunteers each day in the Expo building and 12
volunteers for each of the Obedience days of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you can help, please contact Cindy
directly at cjestarkey@msn.com or 717.938.9912.

2015 in the Community Room at Park City Center. While there is no special program for
this meeting, we have arranged for Dr. Judith Shoemaker to speak at our April
8, 2015 meeting. Dr. Shoemaker is a holistic veterinarian doing acupuncture,
chiropractic, homeopathic, cold laser, and more. Her practice is located in southern
Lancaster County and her website is: http://www.alwayshelpfulverterinaryservices.com. She will speak about keeping
gait correct by keeping nails short and will take audience questions on other
things. The Board of DirectorÕs has officially appointed Richard and Susan
Powell as co-chairs for the 2016 Celtic Classic Dog Show; Deb Bush and Mary
Hartman as co-chairs of the 2015 Red Rose Classic; Dave Martin, publicity
chair; Deb Eckert, chair of Shop for a Cause; Debbie Radanovic as Picnic

A
Perspective of Junior Showmanship
****
Authored by Joy Ellwanger ****
Many of us go to a dog show
to show our own dog or have a professional handler show the dog in the
conformation ring. This past year, I drove to many shows to watch my dog in the
ring under the hands of a Junior handler. Junior Showmanship is a competition among our
young people where they are judged on their handling skills and the
presentation of their dog.
The Junior ring is one of the
best places to learn about presenting a dog in the ring. Various breeds are
combined into one ring; dogs of all shape and sizes. Many of these Juniors have
learned how to groom their dog and are responsible for the bathing and trimming
of their dog. These kids are true competitors and most are eager to handle a
dog.
As a spectator at the 2014
Eukanuba show. I observed the top performers from across the country. Every one
of the 124 exhibitors deserved to be in that ring. They were phenomenal
handlers; very serious and determined to do their best! I saw their dedication,
commitment and bonding that these Juniors have toward their dogs.
These children and teenagers
are our future to the sport of dog showing. Whether it be conformation or
performance (agility, obedience, rally, barn hunt, etc.), we, as dog show
enthusiasts, MUST support them. As a kennel club, we should offer significant
awards or prizes for them at our events. Some kennel clubs have offered
computers, lap tops, monetary scholarships, and $100.00 gift cards. When there
is a cluster of shows, sometimes a BEST JUNIOR in CLUSTER is awarded where the
Best Junior from each day of the cluster compete on the final day. I think we
would see an increase in our Junior entries if the Lancaster Kennel Club and
also York and Delaware County would offer such prizes. The Celtic Classic would be a prime show to offer Best Junior of
the Celtic.
LetÕs support our Juniors as they are the future to our sport!
